Barracuda Returns to Old Greenwood
Old Greenwood Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2004, will once again host the Barracuda Championship from July 14–20—its sixth time hosting since the event relocated from Reno in 2020.
Scenic and Strategic Excellence
Voted “Best Golf Course” on Tahoe’s North Shore, Old Greenwood is acclaimed not just for its technical layout but for its breathtaking mountain vistas—especially the iconic backdrop of Northstar at several holes. The altitude also keeps summer temperatures in the comfortable low 90s, a welcome contrast to the scorching desert heat in nearby Reno.
Course Prepping for Prime Time
During winter, reminders of Tahoe’s climate—ice, snow—challenge turf maintenance. Groundskeeper Joe Valente and his team meticulously de-ice, aerate, and maintain the greens. Once spring arrives, there’s just a two-month sprint to tournament condition. The week before play, from final grooming to the inclusive practice rounds on Monday and charity clinics, every detail gets attention.
Innovative Format & Emerging Talent
What makes the Barracuda Championship stand out is its use of the Modified Stableford scoring system, rewarding aggressive play, where points, not strokes, decide ranking. It’s also a launching pad for rising stars. Last year, 20-year-old Nick Dunlap seized the title, becoming the youngest ever champion and pocketing $720,000 after delivering a spectacular eagle.
Community and Charity
The tournament draws around 700 volunteers and contributes over $6 million to regional nonprofits—supporting schools, youth programs, and museums—underscoring local commitment. The Old Greenwood course opens to the public before and after the tournament, giving everyone the chance to walk the same fairways as the pros.
