There is not much that compares with celebrating the holidays with family and friends in Tahoe…especially when the forecast calls for daily snow during the entire Christmas week. It has been so refreshing to see the return of our amazing winters and to enjoy the abundance of outdoor recreation that snow brings. Just this week I took my wife backcountry skiing at Incline Peak on the East Side of Lake Tahoe. Of course there is no shortage of world class resorts in the area to ski, but being in the backcountry provides a sense of solace and peace to your skiing experience like no other. Although it may seem intimidating, if you are up for the challenge, most anyone can get out there and enjoy an invigorating climb that leads to unbeatable views and fresh, untracked powder.
As a competitive runner, my wife moved to Tahoe to train in the altitude and run the beautiful trails…she’d never been on skis in her life. Her coaches always discouraged “stupid fun,” which meant any form of recreation that could lead to a season altering injury. She was an incredibly regimented athlete and strapping boards on her feet and sliding down a mountain was as foreign to her as it could get. Watching her face her fears and hop on a chair lift for the first time was both exciting and comedic. With a few years of her pushing her boundaries and a bit of colorful language here and there, we now share amazing tours together in Tahoe’s majestic backcountry. It’s easy to stick with the things that we’re good at or comfortable with, but there’s always adventure in challenging yourself.
