Greetings –
It is 4:30 a.m. and I awake to my alarm clock buzzing. I jump out of bed with a big grin on my face in anticipation of my morning to come. Why am I so happy to be waking up this early? Snow…
If you are a skier, snowboarder, mono-boarder, or just a fan of winter, it feels like the long summer days are never going to end. Don’t get me wrong, Truckee/Tahoe is one of the most beautiful areas to recreate in the summertime, but that is the icing on the cake. It is all about those incredible Tahoe winters and there is no place better to experience them than the peace and quiet of the backcountry. It is the equivalent of of mountain biking in the summer with the exception of using all your skills and knowledge gained over many years of experience studying snow and traveling safely in avalanche terrain. In a fast paced world full of technology, social media and noise, there is something raw and exciting about navigating in the mountains.
In Tahoe we rarely measure snow in inches, we are usually talking about multiple feet. During the storm cycle we are skiing low angle sheltered terrain that offers visiblitly and safety in the right area. When the storm clears we venture above tree line to find those magical alpine bowls and steep chutes as safety permits.
For the last few months, all we hear about in a ski town is speculation of what kind of winter we are going to have. Just like politics, everyone has their own opinion – El Nino, La Nina, the squirrels are storing nuts early, the Sandhill Cranes are migrating early, the pine needles are flying off the trees early, the Farmer’s Almanac says… All I know is I am barely able to look out my window as my house is almost completely buried in snow and I think to myself that I will easily be skiing some of the best backcountry lines the Sierra’s have to offer well into August. When we have major storm cycles of this nature, the energy in ski towns is electric, you can’t help but get fired up to go skiing.
Whether I am climbing and skiing backcountry runs, or going up the magic carpet with my two year old, I just enjoy sliding on snow with friends and family, covered in grins ear to ear.
